What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a process that employs composite resin—the same material utilized for composite fillings—to remodel a tooth. This method, known as Bonded Restoration, allows for the repair of teeth that are chipped, cracked, or broken by building them up with composite resin. The result is a tooth that looks and functions as good as new, enduring over time with proper care. Besides repairing damage, dental bonding serves as a means to improve the aesthetic appeal of your smile by reshaping teeth, adjusting their colour, and filling gaps without the need for veneers or orthodontics treatments.

Comparing Dental Bonding to Other Dental Restoration Options

When it comes to enhancing or restoring your smile, a variety of options are at your disposal, each suited to meet specific needs. During your consultation, we’re here to explore all available options with you, discussing the advantages and limitations of each to help you make a well-informed decision.

Some of the notable benefits of dental bonding include:

Quick and Comfortable Procedure

Unlike the procedures for fillings or dental veneers, which often involve some drilling, dental bonding typically requires little to no removal of the natural tooth structure. This makes the bonding procedure almost entirely pain-free.

Cost-Effective

While more comprehensive treatments like dental veneers and orthodontics are more costly due to their complexity and the dramatic changes they offer, dental bonding is a straightforward, budget-friendly option for minor dental adjustments.

Ideal for Minor Repairs

For those seeking significant alterations to their smile, a more detailed treatment plan involving dental veneers, crowns, or orthodontics might be beneficial. However, for smaller modifications, dental bonding is the simplest and most effective solution.

The Dental Bonding Procedure Explained

The dental bonding process is streamlined, whether your goal is restoration or cosmetic enhancement. Here’s what you can expect:

Tooth Preparation

A dental matrix, a thin plastic film, is used to protect adjacent teeth. Your tooth is then cleaned, dried, and etched with a mildly acidic gel to prepare it for bonding.

Application of Composite Resin

After the etching gel is rinsed off and the tooth dried, the composite resin is applied in layers. Each layer is cured with a special light to ensure strength and durability. The resin is selected to match your natural teeth for a seamless finish.

Finishing Touches

Once your bite is checked and adjusted if necessary, the tooth is polished, leaving you with a beautifully restored or enhanced tooth that blends perfectly with your natural teeth.

Cost Considerations for Dental Bonding in Stittsville

The cost of dental bonding varies widely, depending on several factors, such as the number of teeth involved, the need for new X-rays, the amount of composite resin required, the location of the teeth, and your overall oral health.

Generally, the cost ranges from $300 to $600 or more per tooth without insurance. Many insurance plans cover dental bonding, especially for restoration purposes, potentially reducing your out-of-pocket expenses to about $60 to $120.

To determine the exact cost of your dental bonding treatment, we consider all relevant factors and require an in-person examination to provide you with an accurate quote. This allows you to understand your final costs and make an informed choice regarding your dental care.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

The dental bonding process is relatively quick and can typically be completed in one office visit, usually within 30 minutes to an hour per tooth. The exact time depends on the extent of the work needed and the number of teeth being treated. Since it’s a straightforward procedure, patients can often return to their normal activities immediately after.

The longevity of dental bonding can vary, typically ranging from 4 to 10 years or even longer, and is influenced by factors such as the specific area of application, your dietary practices, and your overall dental care routine. Should your dentist observe any signs of wear during regular check-ups, additional composite resin can be applied to maintain the durability and integrity of the bonding.

Bonding may not be a forever fix, but it offers a durable solution. With proper dental maintenance, healthy eating practices, and consistent check-ups, dental bonding can endure for over ten years. Should there be any signs of wear and tear on your dental bonding, it can be reinforced by applying extra composite resin.

Dental veneers and dental bonding are distinct procedures, with veneers offering a more durable solution and being ideal for those seeking significant alterations to their smile. While veneers are a superior choice for long-term aesthetics, dental bonding presents a more budget-friendly option for minor adjustments. Bonding is also less invasive, requiring minimal alteration to the natural tooth structure.

Yes, dental bonding is commonly used to fill cavities as it is a versatile treatment that can be precisely shaped and polished to match the surrounding tooth structure, offering a common and cosmetic alternative to traditional silver amalgam fillings. Bonding material is applied directly to the cavity after the decay has been removed, making it an effective and aesthetically pleasing option for treating cavities, especially in visible areas.

Dental bonding is safe and preserves most of your natural tooth, but it might chip or break, though it’s easily fixed. It doesn’t whiten like natural teeth, so consider teeth whitening before bonding or replacing it after whitening. For more durability, think about veneers or crowns as stronger, longer-lasting alternatives.

Very neat and clean place, I strongly recommend A2 Dental. Staff and receptionist are very welcoming, they provide and prioritize comfort. A big plus to me is that they have a screen to watch shows while getting your teeth cleaned so I dont have to awkwardly stare at my Doctor unlike my previous dental place. Overall though, amazing first time. I look forward to my future appointments. :)
